Technology Meets Lent

Here are 4 online apps that will help you meditate, pray or read your bible. Check them out – they are all easy to use and spiritually rich.
(All 4 are for use with Andriod or iOs devices and are free and easily downloaded.)

Meditation Apps

Time is so precious these days, and despite our best efforts, we often don’t have the time to “be still and know that God is near.” Here are two meditation apps that make it easier to take that time and simply breathe.

Calm lets you choose an from a variety of guided meditations, ranging from 3 to 25 minutes sessions. There are all sorts of other options, including soothing sounds and calming pictures that you can simply listen to or look at to ease your stress and daily craziness.  Highly recommended – Seven Days of Calm – daily 10-minute guided meditations.

2. Stop, Breathe. Think.
Again – over 55 guided meditations for the beginning and end of the day. The exercises focus on compassion, sleep, depression and anxiety.

(Both of the above apps come highly rated and recommended by Healthline, SELF and Mindful.org.)

For help with Prayer

3. Pray as you go
This is an absolutely wonderful app that offers short, daily prayer and mediation sessions designed to be listened to on many devices – and designed especially for travelling to and from work. Each session combines music, a scripture reading, and some questions for reflection.

Pray As You Go is produced by Jesuit Media Initiatives and the material is written by Jesuits in Britain and beyond, and other experts in the spirituality of St Ignatius of Loyola.

Bible Online

4. YouVersion Bible App
One of the things we discovered during the Animate Bible series was how easily accessible the Bible was online. Who needs Gideon Bibles in hotel rooms? All you need is your smart phone or iPad, an internet connection and you’re set.

One of the best free, online apps we found for Bible study was YouVersion.   The folks at YouVersion “wholeheartedly believe the Bible has the power to transform lives,” and they have done a wonderful job in bringing the Bible directly to the people.

YouVersion offers many (many!) Bible versions in over 1,000 languages. It’s easy to navigate from one book of the Bible to another, and within a book’s chapters as well. If you want, you can sign up to receive a Bible verse a day, but this is optional.
