The Seeds of Closeness were Planted

Recently several families from St. Mary’s attended ECC’s Family Camp.  Emily Skeehan offers her reflections on this week below.

Family Camp at ECC was transformative. It was my first experience, and I felt so welcomed. To me, family is anyone you have a special connection with, a connection of the heart. So I called up my fellow St. Mary’s parishioner, Brooke, and asked  her to join me and my kids at ECC Family Camp. I love witnessing how Brooke is developing a loving relationship with my family, and I hope she feels welcomed into our family. In addition to Brooke, my Episcopalian-devoted parents, and sister joined my sons, Arthur and Connor Skeehan, for an unforgettable 4 days on a beautiful piece of land owned by the Episcopal Diocese of RI.

The Holy moment came when my kids were asking to get to church on time! But for me, what I loved most was how all my fellow companions and counselors participated so fully with genuine enthusiasm and pride. During the adult coffee time, ECC Chaplain Drake Douglas led a discussion on what it means to be God’s children. It was interesting to reflect on everyone’s childhood experience and how we can continue to live our lives as children of God. There is no better place to embody the spirit of this scripture verse then at camp! People of all ages were dancing, singing, creating, swimming, and moving in nature. My older sister will always be a kid at heart. Family camp was a wonderful opportunity to carry on camp traditions by having her nephews learn camp songs and activities. We came together to share great food and a joyful spirit during our camp stay.

Summer camp is a time for kids to make lifelong memories and that is exactly what ECC does while aiming to also be inclusive to everyone. From Body Shop (the daily dance class) to the talent show, everyone was accepted and encouraged to be themselves. The St. Mary’s trio of Brooke Humanski and Chris and Leo Barker represented us well at the talent show as this video attests.

Not only did I discover their musical talents, but I learned Sara Barker is a gifted dancer, cyclist, and sailor. It was a humbling experience getting to know the Barkers as well as military families, ECC lifers, and single people!

ECC family camp celebrates and sustains joyful, outdoor summer experiences where all can thrive. The goals of the ECC are to nurture authentic relationships with God, one another, and ourselves; help every camper experience joy in a safe and comfortable environment; show each camper the love of God in community; and celebrate each individual for who they are, created in the image of God. My family developed new friendships, respect for one another, and were able to participate in common worship and fun, feeling more confident and connected.

I felt the seeds of closeness were planted during those wondrous,  extended, self-revealing conversations at the dining hall. My kids developed a sense of independence while feeling the mentorship and comfort of older campers, counselors, and God’s love. I am confident the new friendships we kindled will live on and strengthen over time.

Even if you can’t attend, I would consider making a donation to their capital campaign to ensure the facilities are updated and people of all means and capabilities can attend and find their own family.
